벚꽃 향기 맡으며 함께 일하는 즐거움

*‘백화골 농부의 하루’는 농장에 와서 일손을 돕는 봉사자 농부의 글도 싣습니다. 이번에는 3월 말부터 백화골에 머물고 있는 프랑스 봉사자 제시카(Jessica Fournel)의 글을 싣습니다. 제시카는 2014년 봄에 처음 백화골에 왔다가 2015년에 이어 올해 세 번째로 다시 방문했습니다. 농업을 전공하고 틈날 때마다 세계 유기농장을 여행하는 친구입니다(편집자 주).

 

 

The weather is getting warmer since the cherry flowers blossomed. For the past two days, the wind has been bringing the sweet smell of the pinkish flowers while we were working in the field.

 

벚꽃이 피기 시작하면서 날씨가 점점 더 따뜻해지고 있다. 밭에서 일하고 있노라면, 바람이 불때마다 달콤한 핑크빛 꽃향기가 풍겨온다.

Carrots seeding has been taking most of my day, soooo small seeds. Now, that this time consuming work is done, I just hope the carrots actually show up!! But you'll see, next time they are going to give me invisible seeds to put in...! I bet...!

 

오늘 하루는 거의 온종일 당근 씨(정말 작다!!) 심는 일을 했다. 시간이 아주 오래 걸리는 일이었지만 이제 거의 끝나간다. 당근이 잘 자라길! 하지만 장담하건대, 아마 백화골 농부들은 다음번엔 아예 눈에 안 보일 만큼 작은 씨앗을 주면서 심으라고 할지도 모른다. 으윽!

The new season starting, one of the main job is to prepare the vegetables beds. We use plastic to keep the soil wet and the weeds asleep. Many seeds find their place in tiny holes of dirt to hopefully come soon enough to life.

 

새롭게 농사 시즌이 시작되면서 요즘 내가 하고 있는 주된 일은 채소들 심을 골을 만들고, 습도를 적절히 유지하면서 풀이 안 자라게 하는 역할을 하는 비닐 멀칭을 하는 일이다. 여러 씨앗들이 비닐에 난 작은 구멍을 통해 자리를 잡고 곧 그 생명력을 피워 올리기 시작한다.

It is not my first time visiting as a volunteer in the farm but the first in its new location as partners of the Buddhist community. So I got to meet members of the community who came helping. Aaaah the work is done so fast that way... it reminds me the old way people used to harvest wheat all together in the country-side in most Europe. It was tightening the community bonds as neighbors were helping each other's for hard tasks and then feasting together. It would be nice that one day this tradition comes back...

  

백화골 농장에 자원봉사자로 온 것이 이번이 처음은 아니지만, 백화골 농부들이 새로 이사를 와서 불교 공동체와 함께 농사짓는 이곳에 온 것은 처음이다. 덕분에 농사일을 도우러 오는 공동체 사람들과 만날 수 있었다. 우와! 여럿이 함께 일을 하니 일이 정말 빨리 끝난다. 이렇게 여럿이 일을 하다 보니, 옛날에는 유럽에서도 밀을 수확하거나 할 때 이렇게 함께 일을 했다는 사실이 떠오른다. 이웃끼리 힘든 일은 나눠서 일하고, 일이 끝나면 축제를 벌이곤 했던 풍습은 지역 공동체를 단단하게 결속시키는 역할을 했다. 이런 전통이 다시 부활된다면 참 좋을 것 같다.

그건 그렇고 내가 지금 자고 있는 구들방이 적절한 온도가 되도록 불을 때는 방법을 익혀야겠다. 온돌은 정말 멋진 한국의 발명품이다! 

(제시카는 이날 밤에도 구들에 나무를 너무 많이 넣고 때는 바람에, 연이은 찜질방 체험을 하다가 결국 밤새 문을 열어놓고 자야 했다..- 편집자 -.)
