Welcoming spring! 반가워요 봄!

  

 

 

 

*‘백화골 농부의 하루’는 농장에 와서 일손을 돕는 봉사자 농부의 글도 싣습니다. 이번에는 2월 말에 와서 3주간 머물다 간 미국 봉사자 욜란타(Yolanta Siu)의 글을 싣습니다. 욜란타는 2017년 처음으로 백화골을 방문했다가 이번에 또 다시 찾아와준 반가운 친구이기도 한데요, 사진작가이자 여행가인 욜란타가 느낀 3주간의 백화골 이야기입니다(편집자 주).

 

 

Swaddled in a tomb of clay

 

Slumber through the winter

 

When grandma’s hoe cracks open

 

The lid finely dusted

 

Letting through the first warm rays of sunlight and the hint of a clear blue sky

 

Made for napping under

 

If not for the damned birds and their chirping

 

Welcoming spring

 

 

 

진흙의 무덤에 뒤덮혀
겨울에 잠들어있다
할머니의 괭이로 깨 열었을때
흙뚜껑은 살포시 먼지로 부셔졌다
따뜻한 햇살과 맑고 푸른 하늘 한점이 맞이하며
그 아래 낮잠을 자고 있는, 저주 받은 새 혹은 그들의 지저귐들이
봄을 맞이할 수 있도록

 

 

 

 

 

When I arrived at beautiful village at the end of February, we were still eagerly anticipating the end of winter. Every night, we took up arms, feeding the ondol full of cherry logs in a battle against the cold that forced its way between the paper doors and its ill-fitting door frame.

 

내가 2월 말 아름다운 마을에 도착했을 때는 겨울 막바지였다. 매일 밤, 우리는 한지와 이가 안 맞는 문틈 사이로 넘쳐 흘러들어오는 냉기/한기에 맞서기 위해 벚나무 장작을 패서 온돌 구들에 가득 채워 넣었다

 

 

 

By the first week of March, however, it became clear that winter had long gone and that spring had mischievously run ahead of us, taunting us, begging us to chase it across the slopes of the Baekun Mountain, now filled with blooming plums and cornelian cherries. And chasing have we been. With friends from Jongto Society and Taiwan, we have been elbow-deep in the rocky soil, spreading mulch and fertilizer and shaping the new fields in a race against the first heavy, spring rains. The days spent at 100 Flower Farm were (as always) long and tiring, but undecipherable jokes, especially the ones told in the Daegu dialect, healed all our physical ills.

 

하지만 3월 첫째 주가 되자 겨울은 이미 물러난 게 확실했다. 봄이 장난스럽게 앞질러가며 우리를 놀리고, 제발 백운산 길을 따라 자기를 쫓아오라며 매화와 봄꽃들을 피우기 시작했다. 그렇게 우리는 봄을 따라갔다. 정토회와 대만에서 온 친구들과 함께 돌이 많은 흙들을 팔꿈치 깊이만큼 뒤집고, 퇴비를 넣고 멀칭을 하며, 거센 첫 봄비에 대비해 새로 밭을 준비했다. 백화골에서 지낸 날들은 (언제나 그렇듯이) 길고 몸은 고단했지만, 뭐라고 해석할 수 없는 농담들, 특히 대구에서 온 정토회 봉사자들의 사투리 농담들이 우리의 피로를 풀어주었다.

 

 

 

 

Now as the second week of March comes to the end, we seem to have finally caught up with spring. The fields are ready to accept the potatoes we’ve cut, the peanuts we’ve deshelled, and the lettuces, cabbages, celery, and tomatoes we’ve so lovingly propagated. Like the effervescent buds sprouting from the still-bare pines covering the surrounding hills, 100 Flower Farm will bloom once again.

 

드디어 지금 3월 둘째 주말이 되어서야, 우리가 드디어 봄을 따라잡은 것 같다. 밭들은 우리가 미리 잘라놓은 씨감자와 까놓은 땅콩들, 그리고 우리가 고대하며 키운 양상추, 양배추, 샐러리, 토마토 등을 받아들일 준비가 되었다. 마치 주변 산등성이에 빼빼마른 가지들 사이로 조금씩 그 메마름을 깨는 꽃봉오리들이 올라오듯이, 백화골은 또다시 풍성히 꽃을 피울 것이다.
